2010 NL East Race

I grew up as a Phillies fan and during their recent run of success, I have tracked the annual pennant race.

Here is my chart of the 2010 race thru 9/23/2010 – the Y axis is Games above .500:

It is interesting to plot the relative positions of the teams in this way. Note the dramatic rise of the Phillies after 7/21/2010, where they had been beaten in 3 straight games by St. Louis and were in 3rd place only 2 games above .500 with a record of 48-46 and 7 games behind Atlanta. The Phillies have been 29 games over .500 since, compiling a record of 44-15 passing New York and Atlanta into 1st Place – 6 games ahead with 9 to play.

This incredible record in the 2nd half of the season ranks as one of the greatest in baseball history.

Phillies Magic Number = 4!
